DNR Fishing Report – March 15th

Badger Lake Northwest Ice is completely out on most of our lakes. This is usually a good time to fish for catfish. Fish into the wind and use winterkill shad, shad guts or some type of stink bait. Big Spirit Lake Northwest The ice is rapidly deteriorating and with forecasted highs in the 70’s use caution if venturing out. The smaller lakes in the area are opening up rapidly with a few boat ramps ice free including Center lake and Lost Island. 03/12 10:53
Big Spirit Lake Northwest Walleye season is closed. Ice is rapidly deteriorating and there is a large open area out from Big Stoney. A few people are venturing out in search of perch. 03/12 10:53

Black Hawk Lake Northwest The lake is completely open. Anglers were catching a few nice bluegill and perch off the Stone Piers in Town Bay earlier this week. That’s slowed down but should pick up as water temps rise. 03/15 11:35

Blue Pit Northwest The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will stock trout into Blue Pit, in Mason City, around noon on Friday. Anglers are required to have a trout stamp, in addition to having a valid fishing license, to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit for trout is five with a possession limit of 10. 03/15 10:23

Lake Cornelia Northwest Crappies up to 8 inches and bluegills up to 6 inches are biting on wax worms. One dock is in at the boat ramp. 03/15 09:46

Little Wall Lake Northwest Crappie and Yellow Bass fishing is good. The best bite is fishing on the jetty on the North end of the Lake using small crappie jigs tipped with wax worms. 03/15 09:36

Storm Lake (incl Little Storm Lake) Northwest The lake is completely open. Fishing is starting to pick up. Traditionally a good time to catch catfish. Special walleye regulations at Storm Lake are 3 walleye per day, all fish between 17 and 22 inches must be released, and only one walleye over 22 inches may be kept. 03/15 11:35
Storm Lake (incl Little Storm Lake) Northwest Walleye – Fair: Anglers are catching a few walleye in the Storm Lake Marina in the southwest corner of the lake. Try using a twister and minnow with a bobber. 03/15 11:40

West Okoboji Lake Northwest Use caution landings are opening up and the ice is rapidly declining. A few people are venturing out in search of panfish in the bays. 03/12 10:53
West Okoboji Lake Northwest Bluegill – Fair: Bluegill action has been fair with most of the fish being caught in Emerson and Millers bay as well as the north end of the lake. Use small jigs and light line for best results. 03/12 10:53
