Adult fishing seminar set for Wednesday, June 11

By Steve Weisman

Looking to learn more about fishing but don’t know where to turn? Well, how about attending the “Adult Fishing Seminar for Novice  Fishermen and Women” on Wednesday, June 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Oak Hill Outdoor (2188 IA-86, Milford).

According to Dean Jacobsen, the event is sponsored by the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club (IGLFC). “This is the second year that we will be offering this event. Couples are welcome and encouraged! After all, you’re never too old to learn new tricks or how to fish!”

The idea for this type of fishing seminar actually came from the father of a youngster who got hooked on fishing by attending several of the youth fishing outings hosted by the IGLFC. Jacobsen says, “So, this dad came up to me and thanked the club for getting his son involved in fishing, but then he said, ‘I don’t know anything about fishing, so what are you going to do about that?’  Jacobsen continues, “The board got together and decided we needed to do something about this. We soon learned there are a lot of adults out there who would like to learn more about fishing, but they don’t know where to turn.”

Couples welcome

The IGLFC board found during last year’s inaugural seminar that several couples signed up for the seminar. Jacobsen says, “It was so much fun to see couples working together learning about the sport of fishing. We had over 30 attend last year with a waiting list of another 20 or so, and we are anticipating a large crowd this year, which makes Oak Hill a great venue to hold the fishing seminar.”

Topics

This adult seminar will hit on a variety of fishing basics:

  • rods • reels • line • lures • bobbers & slip bobbers • knot tying • basic information on fishing from shore & docks & wader fishing.

Those IGLFC anglers leading the seminar include Lance Lundbeck, Kelly Cook, Terry Thomsen, Matt Bichel, Dave Hennings, Rick Petersen, Larry Slota and Dean Jacobsen.

Cost for the evening will be $20, which includes the seminar, meal and refreshments. There will be no registration limits. To register, email Dean Jacobsen at djacobsen@nw.bank.
