I must admit…I am a true believer in the efforts of the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club (IGLFC). More and more, with a membership approaching 450, it’s becoming a true community organization that reaches to communities throughout northwest Iowa. Dedicated to promoting fishing, conservation and education, the club serves anglers of all age groups, skill levels, while fostering a welcoming environment for both locals and visitors who are passionate about fishing.

About the youngsters

One of the most important objectives of the IGLFC is to reach out to youngsters all across the area hosting by hosting activities and youth fishing clinics throughout the year. Moreover, each youngster leaves with a tackle box of quality fishing lures and baits. At other times, each participant gets a quality rod and reel. At ice fishing clinics, the youngsters get an ice fishing rod/reel combo with a pre-tied ice fishing lure ready for the day’s fishing. Partnerships are also being forged with several naturalists in area counties.

Memberships and sponsorships are important for the success and growth of the IGLFC. Memberships provide financial support to help pay for the cost of the clinics, family events and crucial conservation efforts. Sponsorships provide financial support for the youth activities with levels ranging from Trophy to Master Angler and Hall of Fame.

Fall raffle

Here’s a fun one! The IGLFC is in the middle of its annual fundraising efforts for the 2025 Fall Raffle! This is a fun-filled opportunity to win fantastic prizes while helping fund the club’s ongoing projects and youth programs. According to Terry Thomsen, IGLFC president, “We have 40 quality prizes with a value of over $21,000. A ticket will cost $10 and can be purchased on the IGLFC website page or by contacting one of our club board members. A full list of prizes can also be found on the IGLFC Facebook page.”

The drawing for the prizes will be held on Thursday, November 13 at the IGLFC’s annual DNR night at Oak Hill Outdoors.

IGLFC’s Fall DNR Night

Never been to one? Well, it’s definitely worth attending. The Fall DNR Night is an annual event that brings together club members, local anglers and representatives from the Iowa DNR for an evening dedicated to fishing education, conservation and community engagement. Held at Oak Hill Outdoors (across from Perkins restaurant at the north end of Milford,) the November 13th event serves as a platform for sharing updates, discussing regulations and fostering a deeper appreciation for the area’s aquatic resources.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with free pizza and refreshments at 6 p.m. The meal is free for members (including all family members) with a $10 charge for the meal for non-members. Memberships will be available for $35 (both individual and family for the same price).

Thomsen also notes, “We will honor all of our veterans in attendance. They will each receive a special gift in honor of their service.”

The evening’s program will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the following:

  • Fishing Club Announcements: Club leaders will review the year’s accomplishments, upcoming events and initiatives.
  • DNR Presentations: Updates on local fisheries, rule changes, stocking programs and conservation efforts.
  • Q&A Sessions: Attendees have the opportunity to ask DNR officials questions about regulations, fish populations and any special concerns.
  • Networking: A chance for anglers to meet, share stories and build a stronger sense of community.
  • Drawing for 40 prizes from the Fall Raffle. Prize winners do not have to be present to win.

So, mark your calendar for the November 13th IGLFC’s annual DNR Night! This event is both a fun night and a valuable opportunity to connect with others and contribute to the future of fishing in Iowa.
