DNR Fishing Report – January 26th

Bacon Creek Lake Northwest A family oriented fishing event is planned for the January 28th trout stocking from noon to 2:30 PM. A short fishing clinic will be held at 12:30 PM. Trout will be tagged and a limited number of prizes will be available for participants who catch a tagged trout. Last weekend fishing was good at Bacon Creek. Anglers had the best luck fishing in the upper end of the lake where it narrows down. 5 inches of ice reported. 01/26 09:46
Bacon Creek Lake Northwest Bluegill – Excellent: Bluegills were aggresively biting on wax worms inthe upper end of the lake in about 12 FOW. 01/26 09:54
Bacon Creek Lake Northwest Crappie – Good: Fish crappie the same as bluegill. 01/26 09:54
Bacon Creek Lake Northwest Rainbow Trout – Good: Trout were being caught with wax worms. 01/26 09:55
Big Spirit Lake Northwest The ice on area lakes has thickened up to at least 6-8″ on most area lakes with as much as 14″ reported in spots that stayed frozen during the warm weather. Wet snow on the ice has made it difficult for anglers to pull shacks out on many lakes. 01/25 08:24
Big Spirit Lake Northwest Most of Big Spirit has 8 or more inches of ice on it. Stay away from Big Stoney as there are still geese keeping the ice open in a small area. Fishing has been very slow since last week’s snowfall. 01/25 08:25
Big Spirit Lake Northwest Yellow Perch – Slow: Many anglers are not bringing in any perch at all, however some reports have been given of decent catches around buffalo run in 20 foot of water. 01/25 08:26
Big Spirit Lake Northwest Walleye – Fair: Walleye fishing has been hit or miss in the early morning and late evening in 10-12 foot of water off Jackson’s Point, Templar Point, and Marble Beach. 01/25 08:27

Black Hawk Lake Northwest Ice conditions have improved on Black Hawk Lake. Special walleye regulations on Black Hawk Lake are three per walleye per day and all fish must be at least 15 inches. Aerators are in operation in Town Bay. 01/26 09:46

Brushy Creek Lake Northwest 5 to 6 inches of ice have been reported in the north and south fingers. Some small bluegill and crappie have been caught. 01/26 10:02

Clear Lake Northwest Anglers are fishing area lakes, but ice conditions are variable. Use caution and drill test holes when heading out on the lakes. Call the Clear Lake Fish and Wildlife Station for current reports (641) 357-3517. 01/26 12:42
Clear Lake Northwest Ice condions range from 3 to 13 inches and are quite variable across the lake. 01/26 12:45
Clear Lake Northwest Yellow Bass – Good: Early morning and evening fishing are the best times to target yellow bass. Anglers are using small jigs tipped with waxworms, wigglers, and minnow heads. Anglers need to remain mobile to find the schools of actively feeding fish. 01/26 12:48
Clear Lake Northwest Walleye – Slow: A few walleye are being caught fishing for yellow bass. Use larger jigging spoons tipped with minnow heads for bait. 01/26 12:49

Storm Lake (incl Little Storm Lake) Northwest Ice conditions have improved at Storm Lake with 5 to 6 inches of ice being reported on the east side. Anglers are allowed three walleye per day, all fish between 17 and 22 inches must be released, anglers are allowed one walleye over 22 inches. 01/26 09:46
Storm Lake (incl Little Storm Lake) Northwest Walleye – Fair: Fishing for walleye has been hit and miss. Anglers have been catching some nice, legal sized walleye in around 8 FOW. Minnows have been the bait of choice. 01/26 09:46

West Okoboji Lake Northwest Many of the bays in West Okoboji have made good ice anywhere from 8-13″ depending on the spots. Winter Games will not be held on the ice this year due to inconsistent ice conditions. 01/25 08:29
West Okoboji Lake Northwest Bluegill – Good: Anglers have caught bluegill in nearly every bay recently. The best bite has been late afternoon. 01/25 08:30
West Okoboji Lake Northwest Yellow Perch – Fair: Some anglers have reported perch in Emerson Bay, sorting is required but some nice fish have been reported. 01/25 08:30

Yellow Smoke Park Lake Northwest The ice is reported to be 5 to 7 inches thick from the handicapped fishing dock on west. Anglers should use caution around the boat ramp and beach area. 01/26 10:05
Yellow Smoke Park Lake Northwest Bluegill – Fair: Bluegill fishing is fairly slow at Yellow Smoke, but the ones that are caught are big. Anglers can expect to catch 6 or 7 bluegills in the 8.5 to 10 inch size range if they put forth a good amount of effort. 01/26 10:07
