By Steve Weisman

As we move into the third week of September, the days of summer begin to leave replaced by fall! This is the perfect time to go after the largest game fish in the Iowa Great Lakes: musky!

The Iowa Upper Great Plains Chapter 29 of Muskies Inc will be holding its annual fall release musky tournament September 19-20.

According to Tom Gude, club secretary, “The club is proud to host the 35th annual fall release tournament on Saturday September 19 and Sunday, September 20 Hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday. All muskies must be a minimum of 30″ in length and be released unharmed.”

To support catch and release practices, tournament catches will be verified by contestants taking photos of fish caught while using a bump board for measurement.

The first place winner will take home $200, while second place will be awarded $100, and third place $50.00.

According to Gude, participants may fish in East and West Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Minnewashta, Upper and Lower Gar lakes.

Adult entry fee is $45, while the youth entry fee is $25 (must be 16 or younger on Sept 16).

A banquet will be held following tournament hours each day at the Dickinson County Expo Center, which includes updated standings, a meal and a raffle.

Cost of each day’s meal is included in the entry fee. Price for non-entrants is $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
